Dear Affiliate Manager, 7 Ways To Tell If Your Affiliate Program Stinks

Question: Why aren’t my affiliates promoting my affiliate program? And, how do I get more to sign up?

Dear Affiliate Manager:

I can tell you in a heartbeat whether or not your affiliate program is attracting loyal, motivated affiliates. It’s easy. Just put yourself in your affiliate’s shoes. If you’re not creating loyalty in your affiliates, they’re going to look for a better program to promote, and you’ll be left in the dust.

Now that I’ve got your attention, let’s go through some key components of making your affiliate program attractive to affiliates, so they don’t start shopping around.

1. Reputations are on the Line.
Of course, number one is quality. Do you have quality products and customer service? An affiliate’s reputation is on the line every time we consider promoting a product or service. If your products are junk or you’re making our referrals upset in any way – we’ll drop you faster than something *really* hot.

2. Lay the Money on the Table.
It’s not just about the percentage commission. That won’t motivate and make loyal affiliates, but, it is a start. Are you talking 5%? Then, unless you offer millions of products at great prices and have a solid reputation, you’re not going to be getting a whole lot of affiliates.

3. Who’s getting credit?
Show your affiliates that you value them by setting long cookies and they’ll keep sending you traffic. How long are your cookies? The longer the better.

4. Closing the Deal.
If your affiliates are sending you traffic, I hope you have a newsletter (or ecourse) on that sales page for two reasons. 1. It means you’re smart and know how internet marketing works, and 2. It means that the affiliates get more than one chance to close the deal, because you’re going to be following up with the lead and closing the sale for us. This shows us that you take your business seriously – a very important indicator.

5. Like Frosting on the Cake.
Assuming all things are equal, if your program is two-tier or residual, you’ll have affiliates lined up to promote you.

6. Are you even trying?
There is nothing more frustrating than joining an affiliate program that you’re really excited about, logging in and seeing … nothing but a couple of links. No content, no ebooks, no videos. Zip. This is especially disappointing if you know the author or owner is sending out a weekly newsletter. Share your articles with your affiliates, allow them to be rebranded, and I guarantee you’ll get loyalty.

7. That’s just Rude.
Almost more insulting than not providing any content is providing ‘leaky’ articles. Yes, I have seen affiliate programs that so “generously” provide articles for their affiliates. But, the articles had plugs for their other programs in the body of the article. Now, I’m not naming names, but I do feel that’s pretty cheap to be stealing from your own affiliates.

Those are just a few ways to tell if your affiliate program stinks.

I hope you read and reread this advice. Treat your affiliates like partners and they’ll plaster your link all over the web. You’ll have affiliates lined up to promote every new product you offer, and they’ll sing your praises every chance they get.

How To Win At Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is the process of promoting the goods or services of another person in exchange for getting a commission every time that one of those goods or services is sold.

Affiliate marketing in this way can be a very easy way for a person to get something done. And when it comes right down to it, the low cost and easy time commitments that affiliate marketing brings to the table are exactly what people need when they are starting up a business.

However, this does not mean that everyone that tries affiliate marketing is going to be successful at it, so even though it is one of the easiest ways to start a business online, you still need to know how to win at affiliate marketing.

Location

In real estate, location is the biggest thing. In affiliate marketing, location is also the biggest thing albeit in a different way. The location we are looking for in affiliate marketing is not the location of geography or region that real estate developers are interested in, but rather the location affiliate markets are looking for is the proper market to sell their products.

Markets are targeted to different things and interested in different things and figuring out which markets are likely to like the products you are marketing is part of becoming a great affiliate marketer. You can make things a lot easier on yourself by ensuring that the affiliate marketing that you do is only directed at markets and people that are actually interested in those particular products.

Leverage

There is a very sad story in some affiliate marketing circles and it is the story of the person that did not understand leverage. This person came up with a fantastic marketing plan for affiliate marketing and tried it on one product.

That plan worked great, but because the profits that it brought in were not enough to sustain a full time income, the person gave up and heartbreakingly went back to their old job.

What is the lesson here? The lesson is that people need to consider leverage when they consider how to win at affiliate marketing. Figuring out a strategy that works is hard, but once you have that strategy your next goal becomes to leverage the strategy by applying it to as many different products as possible.

If you can make $100 a week selling a certain product, why not start building up your infrastructure so that you end up making $10,000 a week eventually by selling 100 products that each make $100 a week?

Critical Thinking

Location and leverage are two examples of things that came about as a result of critical thinking. Someone was faced with a problem (too few people interested in the general public or too little profit from selling one product) and came up with a solution by thinking on their feet.

Everything that you do in affiliate marketing will require this type of critical thinking and it would be impossible to go through the hundreds of different ways that this is already true of the field. Just remember to always re-evaluate the situation you are in and try to think critically about ways that you can make it better.

So You Want To Be An Affiliate Marketer

If you’re like 99% of the population, you have some interest that you are passionate about. Maybe it’s travel, or sports or animals. If you have an interest like this, why not make some money from it? Create a website to showcase your interest, join some affiliate programs and add the links to your new website. Now, starting raking in the cash. Simple, right?

No, not really. When a new affiliate marketer comes to me for advice, I tell him or her it’s not as easy as it sounds. Many will listen to my suggestions and then “go his own way” to creating banner farms. Sometimes pretty, but not very effective. My biggest piece of advice is “Don’t create a website about pets and add affiliate banners like satellite tv or gambling or dating to it. It doesn’t work!

Let’s start by discussing what affiliate marketing really is:

Affiliate marketing is a partnership between a web merchant and one or more affiliates. Affiliates are paid commissions for referring others to the site - specifically for generating sales, leads or “clicks.”

There are a lot of benefits to affiliate marketing. You don’t have to deal with customers, worry about payment processing or find your own affiliates. But, do you have the patience it takes to build from the ground up? It takes knowing yourself. It takes time and it takes persistence. It takes having a strong desire to succeed. And it takes a little bit of luck. You’re not going to become a millionaire overnight - sorry!

Again, what’s your passion? What affiliate products can you find that will compliment your interests? Do those affiliate products actually sell? Do your homework! You must research your products thoroughly.

It’s not easy to be a successful affiliate marketer. There’s a lot you must learn. Once you get your website up, you need to know how to market your site effectively. You’ll need thousands, even tens of thousands of visitors to see your affiliate products’ “offers.” Think big! Go for LOTS of sales - not just one! By the way, don’t sell - PREsell! The real key to being successful with affiliate marketing is to develop a good content based website and weave your affiliate links into all your content.

Create a list - a newsletter. You must have a way to bring your website visitors back to your site. Once they leave, they won’t be back without some incentive. Put your newsletter signup box on every page of your site because you never know what page your visitors will land on first.

Be creative. Think of ways to keep your visitors coming back. Perhaps with contests or polls. You might want to give away a “freebie” every once in a while. Write reports and articles. Keep your content fresh and new.

What do you think? Do you still want to be an affiliate marketer? Good, then get started, and, as the saying goes, “Keep on keepin’ on.”

Why An Independent Program Is Better Than Joining The Affiliate Networks

If you have a shopping cart on your site and you are not involved in affiliate marketing than you are missing out on one of the strongest online marketing techniques available to you. Affiliate marketing is a proven success and it is responsible for millions of dollars in sales for a great many websites.

In fact, affiliate marketing is one tool that levels the playing field for smaller online retailers. A tiny site can work day to day and gain thousands of affiliates in a short period of time. A thousand affiliates in six months for someone working an hour or two a day, a few days a week, is very realistic.

A rough definition of an affiliate program is simply a program that allows webmasters to display your ads on their website and get a cut of the sales generated from the traffic that they send to your site. So, if webmaster Joe puts an ad on his website for your product and a hundred people click that ad and go to your site and three people end up buying your product, Joe will earn a percentage of the money you make from these sales. At the end of each month, you send Joe his check.

One great aspect of the affiliate marketing campaign is that you pay for the advertising only if it is effective and you pay the affiliates only after you have received payment for the sales made. You can’t beat that!

The up front cost is generally under a couple of hundred dollars. This is to buy the affiliate software and install it on your server. This is an inexpensive way to begin and it also has advantages over the other option of joining an affiliate network.

There are a few big affiliate program networks that charge five grand or more to join and will integrate your site in to their network and expose it to their base of thousands of potential affiliates. This is a tempting way to spend five grand and it seems to makes sense that the exposure to the affiliates will be worth the large set up fee. But unless your site is truly unique you will also encounter serious competition within the network. Because of this, every time you recruit a valuable affiliate they will join the network and be exposed to your competitor’s offers plus those of a thousand other affiliate programs. Very distracting and not exactly preferable.

This is the advantage of an independent program. The affiliates you recruit will be focused on your program alone. Why spend so much money and so much time bringing in affiliates who are immediately directed to other programs as soon as they join? This is a big negative for affiliate networks that makes a strong case for running an independent program.

Setting up an affiliate program is very easy. You need some good affiliate software installed on your server and you need the ads. For the software, iDev has a great program for only a hundred dollars. They will install it for you for an additional fifty. For a great affiliate program software package, check out iDev’s at: http://www.idevdirect.com/affiliates/idevaffiliate.php?id=906

The ads you can create on your own. If you are uncomfortable creating your own ads, look for a good art forum and post with a request for help from a graphic artist. Usually you can find a good artist for an affordable amount.

Once your affiliate software is set up and you have loaded a few ads, you can begin to recruit affiliates. The first thing to do is to submit your program to affiliate program directories. Simply search “affiliate program directories” and you will find a nice list. The directory traffic will bring in some nice affiliates but your own efforts in recruiting will generate the best results.

To recruit affiliates is a simple procedure. Search the web the way you would expect your customers to and go to the sites that come up in the top of the search results. Check the site out and if it looks good send the webmaster an email or a letter, or both. The letter is mentioned because spam filters have begun to block a lot of legitimate email and letters have had fantastic response rates. Working the phone is always good too.

As your affiliate base builds so will your sales. Run weekly or monthly specials, create new ads consistently and communicate with your affiliate using a newsletter and/or a blog. Keep the communications professional and consistent and you will see your program grow every month.

For a small investment you buy a lot of potential. It’s not a get rich quick scheme and it does take a serious effort on your part but the nice thing about affiliate programs is that if you have a good product, and you put the effort forth, you can build an online sales force consisting of thousands of websites helping you sell your product. You only pay for results and only after you get the cash. Few marketing programs compare.

Affiliate Programs And Affiliate Marketing: A Wealth Of Opportunities

For as long as employment has been the mandatory way in which to make money, people have been looking for easy escapes. The dream of earning a huge salary without much work, has been the goal of many but has been realised by very few. The online revolution seemed to pry open many of the doors that had shut in the real world. However even now there is an air of disillusionment hanging around the Internet, following the dot com crash and rumours and speculation abound about security.

But despite the seemingly insurmountable odds one online industry that has welcomed people of all abilities, backgrounds and qualifications has continued to thrive. The affiliate marketing program is a web based advertising realm, which offers regular website owners the chance to host advertisements and hopefully to earn a little money.

Even in the affiliate program the big money doesn’t come easily, it takes time, patience and some good business decisions. The first of these decisions lies in which industry that a new affiliate wishes to join. The Internet is a hot bed of industry performance, with its uninhibited global reach business and enterprise has become a cornerstone for the new e-industries.

One of the most successful global sectors is that of online gaming. People from all corners of the global village have been signing up and playing along in some of the most exciting betting action ever seen. Sports betting has become a particularly hot industry, turning over billions of dollars each year, and maintaining one of the largest clientele of an industry. As such the sports betting sites provide the optimum partnership level for new affiliate, looking to get a cut of the action.

The fledgling affiliate is given all of the marketing tools and instructions to make their site a successful advertising forum. Making the transition from Internet user to marketing guru an easy one. No money exchanges hands in this initial transaction, the affiliate is instead paid on a commission basis. Each fully signed up customer the affiliate attracts brings them extra revenue.

In the sports betting market this revenue tends to be based around the financial gains that individual creates for the site. The sports betting sites ordinarily offer up to 35% of each player’s revenue, to the affiliate that attracted them. Therefore affiliates can earn in line with the profits of an online bookmaker, meaning that like the sports betting sites, the affiliate is able to earn without boundaries or caps.

Due to the ease with which a person can sign up and start earning through the online sports betting affiliate program, there is absolutely nothing stopping any person signing up and earning. The potential for custom in the sports betting market is unparalleled, therefore an affiliate has a huge Internet clientele to exploit. The earning capabilities of an online affiliate are only inhibited by their own willingness to work and experiment with the online advertising options.

The affiliate marketing program offers opportunity in return for very little in the way of effort or financial backing. In essence you can reap the rewards of your own labours, whilst collecting more in the process, just through hosting advertisements.

Affiliate Tracking Options: Diy Or Affiliate Manager?

When it comes to tracking your affiliates, should you use a manager or do it yourself? To be sure, there are pros and cons to both approaches. If you do it yourself and you have a lot of affiliates you could find yourself spending most of your time managing affiliates and not running your business. On the other hand, if you hire a manager to oversee your affiliate program for you then you could have some out of pocket expenses, which could get expensive if you don’t have any affiliates or if you go a long time with only a few affiliates who are producing anything for you.

A good rule of thumb is only spend money when you can justify the expense. In other words, when you first start your affiliate program try doing it yourself for awhile then hire a manager when you have at least one affiliate who is producing enough sales for you to justify hiring a manager. A good affiliate manager will cost you 15%-20% of your total affiliate volume, but some managers charge a flat fee in addition to a percentage of the volume and that’s where you could have some unnecessary expenses.

You may have heard of the 80/20 rule. It is a reasonable expectation that 20% of your affiliates will produce 80% of your sales volume. In other words, you will likely have to get 5 affiliates before you find one that really does much for you.

Even then, he will likely only produce 80% of your total volume, so if your total average monthly sales volume from your 5 affiliates is $100 then probably $80 of that is coming from one affiliate. That’s not a whole lot of business. That’s probably where you want to be before you start shelling out $15-$30 per month on an affiliate manager. At any rate, whatever your monthly cost for an affiliate manager, you want at least that much coming in the door from your affiliate sales before you turn over management to a manager.

Think about this…

Affiliate Marketing: Characteristics Of A Good Affiliate Program

Affiliate Marketing has developed into an Internet marketing specialty. Not everyone can do it effectively. It’s not real hard, but it is tedious work and requires some attention to detail. The best affiliate marketing programs all have certain characteristics that make them successful. Here are a few of the most important characteristics of an affiliate marketing program:

Pays monthly - This is a big one. If you don’t pay often enough you’ll lose affiliates and you can’t grow without affiliates.

Pays generously - This is perhaps the most important determinant of whether an affiliate marketing program will succeed. Pay your affiliates well and they will stick with you. Don’t, and they will leave.

Two-tiered structure - Two-tiered affiliate programs are under rated, but the best affiliate marketing programs pay people for recruiting other affiliates. The second tier doesn’t have to be much. It can be about 10% or even 5% of the affiliate commission (which I highly recommend be about 50% for most products), but at 5% of the affiliate commission your affiliates will recruit others to join their sales team and you will succeed all the more.

Provides support materials - Banners, sales pages, other resources. Whatever will help your affiliates be better affiliates, that’s what you need to do. Support them and they’ll support you.

Communicates with affiliates on a regular basis - Really. Don’t leave your sales team hanging. Either write a blog just for your affiliates, start an e-zine just for them, or both. But you have to communicate with them on a regular basis so that they don’t feel abandoned.

Offers specials - Every now and then you need to run a special, or a contest. This is motivational. It gets people excited and motivated, excited affiliates work harder to sell your products.

If you want your affiliates to be successful, you’ve got to give them the tools to do so. Otherwise, they will abandon you like a sinking ship and you’ll be left selling your own cold, stale products.

Affiliate Cloaking…What It Is And Why You Should Be Using It If Your An Affiliate Marketer

Affiliate Cloaking… what IS it and are YOU using it is the question?

That’s right, this question apply’s to everyone who actively promotes other companys products and/or services as an affiliate or is considering it because you could be losing BIG BUCKS from your hard earned affiliate commissions because of those UGLY long affiliate URL’s that scream out… “I’m An Affiliate” and scare your visitors and/or potential customers away.

People are very funny this way online when it comes to first impressions.

As an example, which would you rather do business with?

A business with a URL like…

http://www.corys-cbmall.com

OR…

http://wetrack.it/eza/af.cgi?aid=3509&ent=25

Now that I’ve planted that seed in your head lets move on to what ‘Affiliate Cloaking’ IS and how it will help convert more of your visitors into SALES!

‘Affiliate Cloaking’ sounds pretty obvious doesn’t it and it really is because all your doing is replacing that UGLY long affiliate URL with a nice cloaked(forwarded inside an invisible frame), professional Domain Name like the one I listed in the above example that remains ‘Sticky’.

What do I mean by ‘Sticky’?

I simply mean that the URL remains the Domain Name you chose once your visitor clicked on it and doesn’t redirect back to the UGLY long affiliate URL you started with, giving YOU, the Affiliate, a professional look in the eyes of your visitors and/or potential customers.

Simply put, they wouldn’t know if you were the Affiliate or the actual owner of that website.

How’s all this possible?

I’ll give you three words… “Advanced Domain Forwarding”.

There are many services online that offer this. Simply go to Google and do a Google search.

Now, if your a serious Affiliate Marketer and/or are just starting out online with affiliate programs then this is something you’ll definitely want to look into.

Not only will you look professional in the eyes of your visitors and/or potential customers you’ll also be Safe- Guarding your hard earned affiliate commissions.

There you have it, “Affiliate Cloaking… What It IS And WHY You Should Be Using It If Your An Affiliate Marketer”.

Remember, first impressions matter, especially when your doing business online.
